VETERAN DRAG RACER BOB ELLIOTT JOINS THE GROWING LIST OF TALENT AND ATTRACTIONS AT THE CPT RACING EXPERIENCE
London, ON (MARCH 10, 2008) – The CPT Racing Experience has added another popular face to the drag racing contingent that will be on hand at the March 15-16 show. Accomplished Canadian drag racer ‘Bogus’ Bob Elliott will bring his more than 40 years in the industry to the show in presenting the Drag Racing 101 seminar and will be signing autographs and talking with fans alongside his 1970’s protective racing suit which will be on display as part of the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame exhibit.
Bob Elliott has competed in several of drag racing’s elite classes throughout his career behind the wheel of his Northern Force-branded race cars and has several achievements worthy of mention. Along with car owner and crew chief John Rossitter, Elliott has the distinction of being the only Canadian to have held a National Hot Rod Association - National Speed Record in the Alcohol Funny Car class. He set the record en route to winning the Snowbird Nationals in Bradenton, FL near the conclusion of the 1989 season, reaching 233.40 mile per hour over the quarter mile racing distance. That win represented the second time in his career that he had won the event, having previously driven to victory at the 1982 edition of the race.
Elliott is credited with holding approximately 50 track elapsed time and speed records throughout North America during his career at tracks in Ontario, Nova Scotia, Quebec, New Jersey, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Virginia and Maryland. The majority of those records were achieved while campaigning his Northern Force Jet Funny Car, which during the late 80’s and early 90’s was one of the quickest and fastest exhibition vehicles in North America, reaching speeds of more than 285 mile per hour in 5.8 seconds in a quarter of a mile.
One of the most significant moments in his career came when he suited up to drive the Northern Force nitro-methane burning Funny Car in competition during the1993 National Hot Rod Association season. That year the team competed in three national events including the NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, IN. Of the three events the team attended they qualified twice, 10th at the Springnationals in Columbus, OH and 15th at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, IN, with the aforementioned marking the first time a Canadian had qualified to compete in Funny Car competition at the U.S. Nationals in eight previous years.
Bob Elliott’s off-track resume rivals that of his on-track accomplishments. He served as the public address announcer at one of Canada’s premier drag racing facilities, Dragway Park in Cayuga, ON from 1983 – 1986. He also provided colour commentary on the GM Motorsports hour during their nationally televised drag racing coverage in the early 90’s. Elliott has been featured in several publications including Performance Racing News, National Dragster, Drag Review Magazine and Super Stock magazine where he was featured as the centerfold in their coverage of the 1993 U.S Nationals. His team has seen the spotlight at several car shows including Motion ’88 and ’89 where they were featured in both the Molson Canadian and Sunoco displays.
Bob Elliott has been recognized for his achievements in drag racing and currently has his original Funny Car fire suit (i.e., protective suit) on display at the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame. He has also been nominated for entry into the Hall of Fame under the ‘competitor’ category.
When asked about being involved with the show, Elliott had this to say; “I’m pleased that Kevin (Bulmer) and the rest of the organizers at the CPT Racing Experience thought of me when considering who would do a nice job with the Drag Racing 101 portion of the show. It will be great to represent our Northern Force Racing team at this event and help to promote our great sport, drag racing.”
You can catch Bob Elliott in the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame exhibit both Saturday and Sunday, as well as during the Drag Racing 101 seminar scheduled for 11:30am Sunday morning.
